Rehearsed with Cygnus Flare today - we have gigs coming up at The Junction jazz bar in Brixton this Sunday and Pizza Express Jazz at the Pheasantry next Tuesday. It feels like we’re past the first hurdle in that we’ve finally finished writing and arranging two sets worth of original music - the hard part now is trying to memorise and be able to play it all well. We have a couple of tunes that are over 10 minutes long with lots of time signature and feel changes, and we’re all trying to get more comfortable soloing over different rhythmic ostinatos in for example 5, 6 and 7 beats per bar. I think the thought of playing live is always making us individually quite nervous at this stage, but every time we rehearse or gig we get stronger as a band. It’s nerve-wracking but also exciting, we’ve put in a lot of hard work and enthusiasm recently and I think we’re looking forward to seeing where it takes us.
